Let’s Write in 2013

January 12, 2013 Writing Prompt:

“A teenage girl’s dead grandmother starts appearing in her dreams and revealing family secrets.”

Riding three hours home from Gram’s funeral in a warm, sun-filled car had lulled me to sleep. The emotional drain after her sudden death finally caught up with me. Gram’s beach house was my home away from home every summer for as long as I could remember and the suddenness of her passing was a shock to everyone. She was the only remaining thread I had between myself and the long-dead father I didn’t remember.

“Lorelei,” Gram’s sing-song voice wove golden notes into my dream-induced state.

“I’m here Gram,” I spun in circles, trying to determine from where the disembodied voice was calling. “Where are you? Why can’t I see you?”

“It’s not important that you see me, you need only hear me, do you understand?” she asked, her voice surprisingly strong… for a dead person. “Lorelei, pay attention dear.”

“Yes ma’am,” I nodded my compliance. I’d talk back to my mom and argue with her until the twelfth of never, even if I was wrong and she was right, but Agatha Gregory — Gram — was a woman no one argued with. Ever.

“I need to tell you something,” she paused to make sure she had my attention. “It’s about your father. That mother of yours was supposed to tell you as soon as you turned eighteen, but we both know that never happened.” Her voice took on an agitated edge, the way it often did while discussing her daughter-in-law, my mom.

“What about my dad?” I asked.

“He’s alive and well and living in Vermont,” she blurted. “Evan Gregory, St. Albans, Vermont.”

I jerked awake and glared sideways across the car at my mom for waking me.
